A delegation from the School of Business and Management, Jilin University, China, visited the Kasuga area of the University of Tsukuba.
On December 11 and 13, 2024, a delegation (3 faculty members and 9 students) from the School of Business and Management of Jilin University visited the University of Tsukuba for a wide range of exchanges, including lectures, laboratory visits, and student workshops.
This exchange visit was made possible by the iConference 2024 (a leading international conference in the field of informatics) held in April 2024, hosted by the School of Business and Management of Jilin University and the Institute of Library, Information and Media Science of the University.
Jilin University and University of Tsukuba in recent
years has conducted exchange in the fields of systems information science and medical science.
On December 11, a Jilin University faculty member gave a lecture, which was attended by about 30 faculty members and students from both universities. Professor Yingtong Guo presented on the topic “How to Explain China’s Economic Growth,” while Professor Jun Deng gave a lecture titled “Interdisciplinary and Topic Preferences in Digital Humanities: A Cross-Dimensional Analysis Based on WoS.” The audience listened attentively and engaged with the content. Jilin University faculty and students then toured the laboratories of The Institute of Library, Information and Media Science (Associate Professor Yohei Seki, Associate Professor Yoichi Ochiai and Assistant Professor LI Jingjing, Assistant Professor Nami Iino and Associate Professor Masaki Matsubara).
Additionally, a student workshop and networking session titled “Information for Pushing the Boundaries of Our Future” was held. Presentations on topics such as digital memory and AI video search were given by five students from Jilin University and three graduate students from the University of Tsukuba. These presentations were followed by an active Q&A session. This workshop/exchange was not only an opportunity to deepen exchanges between students of the two universities, but also a useful opportunity from the perspective of fostering the next generation of human resources in the field of informatics.
On December 13, three faculty members of the Institute of Library, Information and Media Science gave research talks. Assistant Professor Hiroyoshi Ito presented “Modeling Social Networks Towards a Human+AI Coexisting Society,” Assistant Professor Koji Murata spoke on “Reconstructing and Representing Medieval Archives in the Digital Age,” and Associate Professor Makoto Kato delivered a presentation on “The Myth of Neural Information Retrieval.” After each lecture, many questions and comments were made by faculty and students of Jilin University.
Afterwards, Professor Yingtong Guo, Vice Dean of the School of Business and Management at Jilin University, Professor Jun Deng, and members of the university of Tsukuba (Atsushi Toshimori, Dean of the Institute of Library, Information and Media Science, Atsuyuki Morishima, Vice Dean of the Institute of Library, Information and Media Science, Norihiko Uda, Chair of the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Informatics Degree Programs in Comprehensive Human Sciences, Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences, Nobutaka Suzuki, Chair of the College of Knowledge and Library Sciences, School of Informatics, and Masahiro Fukuda, Head of the Library and Information Area Academic Support Office) held a Deans Meeting to discuss the possibility of future education and research collaboration.
Discussions on specific cooperation details, such as mutual dispatch of students and consideration of online joint classes, were held in a friendly atmosphere.On the same day, Assistant Professor Yi Song of Jilin University and Assistant Professor Kai Nishikawa conducted a research exchange on data governance.
This visit is anticipated to further strengthen international research and educational cooperation between Jilin University’s School of Business and Management and related academic units at the University of Tsukuba, such as the Institute of Library, Information and Media Science and the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Informatics Degree Programs in Comprehensive Human Sciences, Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences. It is also expected to enhance the international reputation of these institutions.
